I seem to remember purchasing a couple of episodes of DOCTOR WHO that had some parts missing but were filled in by narrative by a cast member, Tom Baker being one.

Yes. They destroyed the tapes to a huge amount of their old stuff thinking they were of no use anymore, then panicked when home video came out and people were demanding things like Doctor Who be released. They then spent loads of (our) money trying to track down any fragments of these lost programs so they could sell them back to us. Famously, the sole suriving copy of the Patrick Troughton story - 'Tomb of the Cybermen' was discovered in a vault in Hong Kong in the early 90's. 'The Ice Warriors' from the same Doctor was released with episodes 2 and 3 made up from production stills and a recording of the soundtrack, with Frazer Hines (Jamie) narrating the action (things like "The Doctor runs for the door...").

I haven't seen the BBC's Quatermass Experiment dvd so I don't know if there's anything like that on the disc - Amazon says it comes with the script - if they have done that the 'new' versions will be copyright. If you want to see the rest, I reccomend the Hammer movie. (In fact all three BBC Quatermass serials were made as movies by Hammer - The colour version of 'Quatermass and the Pit' is fantastic!)

It may interest you to know that last night I uploaded the theatrical trailer for "Enemy From Space", the U.S. title for the "Quatermass 2" movie. You can see it here if you're interested:

I'll see about uploading the trailer for "Five Million Years To Earth (Quatermass And The Pit)" later.
